Standards

While specific standards for sustainable systems do not exist there are a variety of international standards to support sustainable systems. The Center will be tracking the emergence of standards that either directly or indirectly provide guidance on effective ways to address system interactions.

One of the most well known standards creator is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which has developed:

  • ISO 14001, 140004 - Environmental Management Systems
  • ISO 14009 – Life Cycle Assessment
  • ISO 14062 – Integrating environmental aspects into product design and development
  • ISO 14020 – Environmental labels and declaration
  • ISO 14024 – Environmental labels and declarations – Type I environmental labeling
  • ISO 14021 - Self-declared environmental claims (Type II environmental labeling)
  • ISO 14025 – Type III environmental declarations
  • ISO 14063 – Environmental communication
  • ISO 14050 – Environmental management vocabulary
  • ISO 14005 - Environmental management systems
  • ISO 14048 - Environmental management -- Life cycle assessment Data documentation
  • ISO 19011 - Guidelines for quality and/or environmental management systems auditing
  • BS 8901 - the British Standard developed specifically for the events industry
