Process Life Cycle Assessment

As the earth's population grows, particularly in middle income countries, there is a need for products that generate less impact on the environment. In order to achieve this, new products are being developed that utilize fewer resources, improve performance, last longer and are designed to be re-used or recycled rather than discarded.

The Duke Center for Sustainability & Commerce is focused on working with industry to help create the next generation of sustainable products through technological and organizational innovations. These innovations will help identify where product resource use can be reduced while keeping or increasing economic benefits for firms and consumers.

Research

Research

Through our research, we develop, test and model how alternative product and packaging designs may alter the overall impact of a product while it is being used by the consumer. Our aim is to enable resource efficient production and use of products to lower their overall environmental impact.

Policies & Regulations

Policies & Regulations

A wide variety of policies and regulations exist, and others are being developed, within the domestic and international arenas related to product sustainability. We provide a synopsis and road map to navigate the landscape of relevant industry led and government activities.

Standards

Standards

Competing standards exist for measuring the environmental impact for products and firms. We provide a comparative analysis of existing standards, and create recommendations to develop new and comprehensive standards, to track these impacts.
