Policies & Regulations

As sustainable engineering takes a prominent role in public works, we are witnessing the emergence of sustainable infrastructure policies. The Duke Center for Sustainability & Commerce is working to track these policies and will offer regular updates on the background and effectiveness of these efforts both here and on our blog.

The most well-known of these are building sustainability rating systems such as the US Green Building Council's LEED green building system, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) program and the U.K.'s BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) prohect for sustainability.

The financial and investment sector is also at the forefront. The World Bank has developed a Sustainable Infrastructure Action Plan (PDF) to move past the traditional economic and financial viability of infrastructure services to ensure that infrastructure programs needs support sustainability.
