LCA Expert Dr. Jesse Daystar Joins Center
Dr. Jesse Daystar has joined the Duke Center for Sustainability & Commerce and will be directing LCA related research and industry consulting projects as the Assistant Director of Corporate Sustainability Programs. Dr. Daystar has a PhD and MS in Forest Biomaterials as well as B.S. degrees in Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering and Paper & Pulp Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Dr. Daystar is a leader in the field of Life Cycle Assessment of forest biomaterials and cellulosic biofuels. Dr. Daystar collaborated in the development of the widely used and publically available Forest Industry Carbon Assessment Tool and the Footprint Estimator for Forest Products.
Dr. Daystar led the implementation of cellulosic ethanol production technologies as the Technical Director of Biofuels for Pesco-Beam Environmental Solutions. During his undergraduate education, Chemical Engineering and Pulp and Paper Engineering, Mr. Daystar managed energy efficiency, process control, and quality control studies with Kemira Chemical and MeadWestvaco.
Outside of his professional career, Dr. Daystar is an avid cyclist and runner participating in many charity rides and races. Most notably, Dr. Daystar rode his bicycle 4,000 miles across the United States raising money and awareness for affordable housing with the non-profit Bike and Build. On weekends, it is not uncommon to find him at his home converting waste vegetable oil to biodiesel for his 1983 Mercedes Benz as he feels he must "walk his talk" to be a true leader in environmental conservation.
